âIâll see you later, little bunny.â I feel his lips ghost against my cheek as Wren sits up, and when I open my eyes, itâs to see that heâs across the room, in front of the open bedroom door, and looking back at me with an inscrutable look on his face.
âWhere are you going?â I ask, sitting up and crossing my legs under me. âSeems a little early for murder, doesnât it?â My voice is dry and humorous, but at this point, I wonât put it past him that murder is on the agenda again.
âIt is,â he agrees. âBut I have to go into my office today, and Iâd like to go back to my place and change. If youâll let me, that is?â
Shrugging, I watch him. âI canât tell you what to do,â I remind my serial killer, gaze never leaving his as I watch the grin spread across his lips.
âNo,â he agrees thoughtfully. âI guess you canât. But Iâll be back later. Iâll bring you dinner, too. Canât have you forgetting to eat.â
âI never forget to eat, Wren. Because Iâm not a child.â I especially donât like being treated like one, or as though I canât take care of myself. If heâs going to stay, itâs something I want him to know.
The smile falls, just slightly, and he tilts his head as he watches me. âI know,â Wren assures me in a quiet tone. âTrust me, I know that. But I enjoy taking care of you, Hazel. Wonât you let me indulge myself?â Thankfully, before I can respond, heâs out the door and striding across the kitchen. I hear him greet the cats, and the door closing behind him a few seconds later as I get up to look around for my clothes.
Quickly, it becomes obvious that laundry should be on my list today. At long last I find a pair of leggings stuffed into my closet that are probably clean, an old tee, and put them on with a grimace. The tee is coarse, having lost its softness in its hundredth wash cycle, but I canât bring myself to care enough to jam my clothes in the laundry basket and take them downstairs to wash them. Itâs not like Iâm going anywhere important enough to do laundry today, anyway.
Especially when Iâd rather stare endlessly into the abyss and dwell on all the things Wren says to me that make my heart twist and my lungs tight with anticipation. I like him, Iâve come to realize. More than I ever thought I would, but thereâs a nagging worry in my heart at the same time.
The obvious one, of course.
Heâs a fucking murderer.
My phone rings just as I grab it off the nightstand, and I bring it to my ear, half expecting it to be him. âHello?â I ask, toeing on my sneakers.
âAre you busy today?â Jennaâs voice is friendly and hopeful. Itâs impossible to say no to whatever sheâs going to ask me to do when she talks like that.
